Articles

Every article opens with the short answer, so you can find it, quote it and get on with your day.

More field notes

  • The short answer. Most coverage starts with a short, well-aimed pitch to one journalist, not a release sent to hundreds. Find the angle that fits what they already cover, offer something only you can give, and make saying yes easy.

    Key takeaways

    • Read the last ten stories a journalist wrote before you pitch them.
    • Lead with the story in one sentence, not your company history.
    • Offer something only you have, like data, a customer, a founder interview or an exclusive.
  • The short answer. AI is very good at research, sorting and spotting patterns in what audiences say and do. It is not good at knowing which idea will make a room laugh or a journalist care. We use it for the first job and people for the second.

    Key takeaways

    • Use AI for research, audience analysis, variations and reporting.
    • Keep people in charge of ideas, final words and relationships.
    • Tell clients exactly where AI is used in their work.
  • The short answer. Buyers forget booths. They remember useful conversations, a moment that surprised them and a follow-up that arrived while they still cared. Design the event around those three things.

    Key takeaways

    • Put your most credible people in front of buyers, the ones who can answer the hard questions.
    • Give people one thing to see or do that they will describe later.
    • Follow up within two working days with something specific to the conversation.
  • The short answer. Small teams do not need a growth department. They need three well-chosen tests a month, a simple way to record the results and the discipline to act on them.

    Key takeaways

    • Test the offer before the colour of the button.
    • Write down the question and the success measure before the test starts.
    • Keep a one-page log of every result so the learning compounds.

Spec work

How we would play it.

Spec work is our own concept work. Each one shows the brief, the idea and what we would measure, so you can see how we think before you hire us.

A shop window glowing late at night

Open Late

The brief
A business bank wants small-business owners to see it as the bank that shows up when it counts.
The idea
In the last week of tax season, one branch stays open until midnight. Accountants on hand, good coffee, and a live board of small-business questions answered in public.
What we would measure
Visitors and appointments booked, local news coverage, social mentions and new business accounts opened that month.
See brand activations
Visitors deep in conversation at a busy business event
Product activationB2B

Ask an Engineer

The brief
A software company needs buyers at a crowded trade show to believe its product is as good as the demo.
The idea
A booth staffed only by the engineers who built the product. A public wall of visitor questions, each answered live and recorded as a short clip for the sales team.
What we would measure
Qualified conversations, demo bookings, clips produced for sales, and deals that cite the event.

The Quiet Launch

The brief
A headphone brand is launching noise-cancelling headphones in a market full of loud launches.
The idea
The quietest launch in the city. A pop-up library downtown where talking is banned, the only sound is in the headphones, and the press invitation arrives as a whisper.
What we would measure
Earned coverage, queue length, demo-to-purchase rate on site and launch-week sales.

Three Tests in Thirty Days

The brief
A growing brand has steady traffic, a flat conversion rate and no time for a big rebuild.
The idea
Three focused tests in thirty days. A sharper offer on the landing page, a second creative angle in paid social, and a three-email welcome series. Keep what wins, cut what does not.
What we would measure
Conversion rate, cost per acquisition and revenue from the welcome series, compared with the month before.
